Gary Geiger - Biography

GARY GEIGER
Fine Art Photographer

A California native, Gary Geiger graduated from the prestigious Brooks Institute of Photography in 1974 and has been a celebrated fine art and commercial photographer on the Monterey Peninsula for the past 33 years.

“In 1982 I was in the Himalayas and met a traveler who spoke of a small town in the mountains of Mexico called San Miguel. I promised myself I would go there and years later I did. Little did I realize then what a profound effect that trip would have on me and the direction of my photography. Color is not only everywhere in Mexico, but in combinations that one would never think possible.”

Photographing in over 30 countries, his choice is to travel and walk. “Walking gives me perspective on the rich history and architecture of a town, as well as chance encounters with people who invite you in and tell their stories.  I put a lot of miles in every day to find that one good image. “

Spotting bright colors exposed at the end of an alleyway, Gary explores the uncharted path.  He returns with visual jewels of color and texture, set amidst the personal and cultural stories that create these vibrant environments.

Gary Geiger’s fine art photography is included in the permanent collection of the Fresno Museum of Art in California.  His work has been used in publishing, interior design, and exhibited in fine art galleries in North America.

In 1991 Gary was commissioned by Graphic Arts Publishing to photograph the Monterey area, which resulted in two books “Among the Cypress” and “Monterey Peninsula, A Cypress Shore”. Together the images and words evoke the beautiful Monterey Peninsula in the pride of those who live there, in the memories of those who have visited, and the imaginations of those who might travel only by armchair among the cypress.
